Though it's been announced as a single-player mode, not providing multiplayer here seems like a missed opportunity given how successful things like Call of Duty's Nazi Zombies have been in creating the kind of multiplayer community the game has so far lacked up.įans can only hope that Horde Mode will wind up as everything it should be - a rampant celebration of DOOM's glorious combat loop where players can compete for more kills and ever-higher scores. Still, while the revamp is a good sign, id may be better off creating a multiplayer component for Horde Mode instead. Battlemode has struggled to retain a player base since launch and certainly needs to make changes to bring players back. Invasion Mode would likely have been a fun addition to, but it probably wouldn't have offered anything new or substantial enough to get players back into the game for very long. The addition of a competitive element through online leaderboards could also help improve DOOM Eternal's longevity, especially for those who aren't interested in re-playing the story or Battlemode. Horde Mode offers players an opportunity to rip and tear to their heart's content. Players continually re-play the same campaign levels over and over to get their DOOM fix. DOOM's main draw is its lightning-fast, incredibly satisfying and violent as all hell gameplay. This is something players have wanted since launch, and for good reason. While some fans may be disappointed about Invasion Mode's demise, there is no denying how perfectly a Horde Mode will fit into DOOM Eternal. However, news on Invasion Mode was scarce until Executive Producer Marty Stratton recently announced that the mode was being canceled. Citing the consequences of working remotely, Invasion Mode is no longer in the works, however, the place is working on something else in its place: Horde Mode.
Eternal's first gameplay reveal teased an Invasion Mode - an opportunity for players to invade the single-player campaigns of other players as a demon and attempt to ruin their day. id Software has rather commendably managed to support the game with The Ancient Gods DLC and new Master Levels among other updates despite the global pandemic. When DOOM Eternallaunched in 2020 to critical and commercial success, it did so with the promise of more content and updates to come.
